Abstract

EFFECTIVENESS OF HEALTH EDUCATION USING BOOKLET “HEALTHY TEETH WITH CONTROLLED DIABETES” ON DENTAL HEALTH KNOWLEDGE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES PATIENTS Lisna Maryani Tambunan*, Siti Sulastri, Furaida Khasanah Department of Dental Nursing, Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health, Yogyakarta Jl. Kyai Mojo, No. 56, Pingit, Yogyakarta 555243 Email: lisnamaryani.lm@gmail.com ABSTRACT Background: Health education is one form of independent nursing intervention to help clients, both individuals, groups, and the society, in overcoming health problems through learning activities and the role of nurses and dental therapy as the educators. The booklet "Healthy Teeth with Controlled Diabetes" is a health education media for diabetes mellitus patients which has a principle on self-management efforts by diabetes mellitus patients to maintain their oral and dental health. Research Objective: Knowing the effectiveness of health education using the booklet "Healthy Teeth with Controlled Diabetes" on the dental health knowledge of the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Dr. Sitanala Hospital, Tangerang. Research Method: This research is a Pre-Experiment design with one group pretest-posttest design. The number of samples was 30 patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, using the Accidental Sampling technique. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Sign Rank test. Research Results: The level of knowledge about the dental and oral health, before being given the health education, was in the Good Category for 18 respondents (60%); and after being given the health education, it increased to 29 respondents (96.7%). Conclusion: The booklet "Healthy Teeth with Controlled Diabetes" can increase the knowledge about dental health in patients with type 2 diabetes; there is a change resulted in 36.7% after being given the health education using this booklet.
