Abstract
Background: Adolescent nutritional status is an important indicator of future human resource quality. Adolescents are vulnerable to both undernutrition and overnutrition. Fast food is generally characterized by high energy, fat, sugar and sodium content and low fiber, so frequent consumption may contribute to an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. Objective: To determine the relationship between fast food consumption and the nutritional status of adolescent girls in Pendoworejo Village, Kulon Progo Regency. Methods: This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The population and sample consisted of 60 adolescent girls aged 12–18 years living in Pendoworejo Village, selected using total sampling. Fast food consumption frequency was assessed using a Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ), while nutritional status was assessed using weight and height measurements and classified according to BMI-for-age (IMT/U) based on WHO 2007 standards. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-Square test with α=0.05. Results: Of the 60 respondents, 27 (45.00%) frequently consumed fast food (>3 times/week) and 33 (55.00%) consumed it less frequently (<3 times/week). Most respondents had normal nutritional status, 41 (68.33%), while 10 (16.67%) were underweight and 9 (15.00%) were overweight/obese. The Chi-Square test showed a statistically significant relationship between fast food consumption frequency and nutritional status (p=0.0025). Among frequent consumers, 8 of 27 respondents were overweight/obese, compared with 1 of 33 respondents among less frequent consumers. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant relationship between fast food consumption frequency and nutritional status among adolescent girls in Pendoworejo Village. Frequent consumption was accompanied by a higher proportion of overweight/obesity. Keywords: fast food consumption; nutritional status; adolescents; adolescent girls.
