Abstract

Clean and healthy living behavior is a preventive effort to prevent various diseases. The behavior of washing hands with soap as one of the behaviors of healthy living is an effort to prevent disease. These diseases include: diarrhea, eye infections, intestinal worms, and gastrointestinal infections that can infect and spread quickly. However, the disease can be prevented by washing hands with soap. Hand washing using soap is very important, therefore it provides an innovative hand washing soap (Hand Sanitizer). Hand Sanitizer has been rife in the market, which is based on alcohol, but has the disadvantage of causing dehydration in the skin. Basil leaves as an alternative to alcohol because there are antibacterial contents in them. The purpose of this research was to determine whether the basil leaf juice can be used as a hand sanitizer. This research is a quasi experiment using pretest-posttest design. This research was conducted in July 2018. The population in this research were third-year students majoring in environmental health and nursing and then taken a sample of 5 people. The results of the examination were analyzed descriptively. Descriptive analysis obtained in the form of an increase in hand germs after using basil leaf juice and has been repeated twice with the same results. Increasing the number of germs occurs after using basil leaf juice sanitizer. The juice of basil leaves cannot be used as a hand sanitizer. Keywords: Hand Sanitizer, Germ Score, basil leaf juice.
