Abstract
Background: Globally, 5–10% of preschool-aged children experience communication disorders. In Indonesia, the prevalence of speech delay among preschoolers is estimated at 5–8%—exceeding the national target of 3–4%—making it a developmental issue that requires attention through early detection and intervention. Objective: To identify factors associated with speech and language developmental delays in children aged 24–59 months within the working area of the Pengasih II Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Kulon Progo Regency. Methods: This was an analytic observational study using a case-control design. The sample consisted of 60 respondents: 20 cases selected via purposive sampling and 40 controls selected via simple random sampling. Data analysis involved the Chi-square test and binary logistic regression for multivariate analysis. Results: The study found that gender (p=0.014), maternal education level (p=0.047), history of premature birth (p=0.004), and number of children (p=0.006) were associated with speech and language developmental delays. Child's age (p=0.634) and maternal employment status (p=0.232) showed no association. Multivariate analysis indicated that gender (p=0.046; OR=4.719) and history of premature birth (p=0.026; OR=8.555) were significant factors associated with speech and language developmental delays. Conclusion: History of premature birth was the most dominant factor associated with speech and language delays, carrying an 8.6 times higher risk compared to children born at term.
