Abstract

Surgical action and anesthesia are stressful actions, as there is a threat to the integrity of one's body and soul. The existence of stress can cause anxiety to patient. Several studies stated that about 60% - 80% of patients who will undergo surgery will experience preoperative anxiety and pre anesthesia in various levels. The factors that cause anxiety include patient age, experience, self-concept and role, education level, access to information, surgery itself, socioeconomic level, medical condition. The cause of anxiety in preoperative patients and pre anesthesia can be due to fear of pain or death, fear of lack information or fear of deformity or other threats to body image. Anxiety can also be disruptive in pre anesthesia and intra anesthesia processes. Patients lacking preoperative knowledge do not know the consequences of surgery and fear of surgical procedures may result in a disruption of the psychological response that often accompanies anxiety. This study aims to determine the how far the correlation between the knowledge of surgery with anxiety level preoperative patients planned to have spinal anesthesia. This study is a quantitative correlational descriptive research while the design of this study using cross-sectional study method. This reaserch took place at PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The study sample consisted of 40 patients using accidental sampling technique. Data collection was obtained from Questionnaire The Amsterdam Properly Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). Data analysis was done by using Spearman Rank test analysis. The result of the research is known that knowledge from 40 respondents there are 29 respondents (72,5%) who have good knowledge. Preoperative anxiety level of 40 respondents there are 20 respondents (50.0%). The result of analysis shows that rho = 0,444 and p = 0,004 (p <0,05) there is significant relation. The conclusion of the study showed that there was a significant positive correlation between operational knowledge and preoperative anesthesia spinal anxiety level.
