Abstract

Background: Spinal anesthesia can cause frequent symptoms of pain, nausea, and vomiting in 80% of patients after anesthesia and surgery. This can cause damage to stitches, regurgitation, aspiration, electrolyte balance, dehydration if nausea vomiting is not treated. The incidence of nausea of vomiting in obese patients is higher than that of thin people because the large amount of fat reserves causes the expenditure of anesthetic drugs to become slower. This situation is of major concern to care in the recovery room and becomes a priority scale for an anesthesiologist. Objective: To know the relationship between body mass index and nausea vomiting post spinal anesthesia in RSUD Dr Tjitrowardojo Purworejo. Methods: Using observational analytic design with cross sectional study. Consecutive sampling consisting of 60 samples included into inclusion and exclusion criteria by using nausea vomiting observation sheet and document study. Test the hypothesis using chi square. Results: Respondents who experienced nausea vomiting post spinal anesthesia (28.4%) while not experiencing nausea vomiting (71.6%). The most common incidence of nausea was vomiting in the early PONV (70.5%) experienced by the obese group (75%) with a significance value of 0.015 (ρ value <0.05) and a contingency coefficient of 0.386, which means low correlation. Conclusion: There was a correlation between body mass index and nausea vomiting post spinal anesthesia in RSUD Dr Tjitrowardojo Purworejo.
