Abstract

Backgrounds : Children with Down syndrome occurs in one of 700 live births or 1 in 800-1000 births, it is predicted that up to this day there are 4 million children with Down syndrome worldwide and 300 thousand of cases occur in Indonesia. Until now there has not been found the most effective treatment method for dealing children with Down syndrome disorders. Children with Down syndrome have problems in their ability to live independently, therefore they need good support from the family. Objectives : This study was conducted to determine the description of family support in children with Down syndrome in Parent of Children with Down Syndrome Association (POTADS) Yogyakarta. Methods : This research is descriptive research by using survey method. The sample of research is 40 respondents by using total sampling technique. Measuring tools are using questionnaires. Results : Family support for children with Down syndrome in 56 study respondents indicated that high category family instrumental support is 69.64%, informational support for high category families is 67.86%, high family emotional support is 76.78%, appreciation family support for high category is 91.07%. Conclusions : Family support for children with Down Syndrome in high category. The POTADS management should further enhance family support with more POTADS forum assemblies.
