Abstract

Abstract The habit of some people in waste recycling is still considered as an activity that time, money and energy wasting, whereas actually the activity has many advantages. One type of agricultural wastes is dry midrib of banana, which contains cellulose up to 63 – 64 %, so that it is potential as raw material for pulp making in the paper production. The aim of this research is to understand the influence of the addition of dry banana midrib variations as one component of recycled paper processing on the paper tensile strength, by conducting an experiment which employed post test only control group design. From the six treatment variations and one control, the average of the tensile strength from 15 sheets of the recycled paper yielded from each ratio of used paper and dry banana midrib, i.,e. 1:0,5; 1:1; 1:1,5; 1:2; 1,5:2; and 0,5:2 were 4474 gram; 5524 gram; 6650 gram; 7848 gram; 9546 gram and 6800 gram, respectively. The p-value derived from the oneway anova testing was <0,001, therefore it can be interpreted that the differences was significant. Compared with the other five, the rasio variation of 1,5:2; produced the best paper tensile strength. The factors that affecting the strength are: fiber length, material components, pressure, and bonds between the fibers which are associated with fine fiber contents. It can be concluded that in the recycled paper processing, the bigger the amount of the material component, the higher the tensile strength is gained. Keywords : recycled paper, dry banana midrib, paper tensile strength test Intisari Kebiasaan sebagian masyarakat untuk mendaur-ulang limbah masih dianggap sebagai kegiatan yang menghabiskan waktu, uang dan tenaga saja.
