Abstract
Background: Anxiety is an uncomfortable or anxious feeling or fear accompanied by an autonomous response. Preoperative anxiety is a common problem experienced by patients undergoing surgery. Surgical procedures regardless of the difficulty of intervention can cause fear for the patient. Some of the main factor of fears reported to being unconscious, the surgery itself and the pain of recovering from anesthesia. One of the factors that can reduce preoperative anxiety is lavender aromatherapy. Lavender oil has a lot of potential because it has some content such as monoterpenehydrocarbon, camphene, limonene, geraniol lavandulol, nerol and most contain linalool and linalool acetate with about 30-60% of the total weight of oil, where linalool is the main active ingredient as relaxation to reduce anxiety. Objective: To Know the effect of lavender aromatherapy on anxiety in preoperative patients with general anesthesia. Method: This is a quantitative pre experimental research using one group pretest and posttest design, conducted in RS PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The sample consisted of 35 patients given lavender aromatherapy selected using consecutive sampling technique. Data collection using Questionnaire The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS), with wilcoxon test analysis. Results: The results showed that there was an average difference between anxiety before and after lavender aromatherapy p value = 0,000 (< 0,05)Thus, lavender aromatherapy had an effect on decreasing anxiety in preoperative patient with general anesthesia
