Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that requires continuous medical care with a multifactorial glycemic control risk reduction strategy. People with Type II Diabetes Mellitus experience changes in their lives such as dietary adjustments, exercise, and blood sugar control that must be carried out throughout life. These changes can indicate negative psychological reactions such as anxiety. Anxiety can stimulate the hypothalamus to release the hormone cortisol which has an effect on increasing blood glucose levels, so that anxiety problems in patients with type II diabetes mellitus need to be given progressive muscle relaxation non-pharmacological interventions. Objective: To apply progressive muscle relaxation therapy to treat anxiety in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Methodology: Using a case study on one patient in the Nakula room at Nyi Ageng Serang Hospital. Results: Progressive muscle relaxation techniques are effective in treating anxiety in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Progressive muscle relaxation gives a relaxing sensation to the body and brain thereby stimulating the pituitary to release endorphins which affect a happy mood and calm the mind. Conclusion: Anxiety problems in patients with type II diabetes mellitus can be overcome by doing progressive muscle relaxation twice a day with 20 minutes of each exercise.. Keywords: diabetes mellitus, anxiety level, blood glucose level, progressive muscle relaxation
